Halesworth Level Crossing, Suffolk (Disused)
I had occasion to visit the Halesworth area on Friday 18th August 2006. On alighting from the train I was attracted to a high quality permanent 'poster' that detailed some of the station/railway history. Included on the poster were vintage 'postcard' illustrations of station staff, buildings and the unique level crossing. The level crossing operated from 1888 to 1958, being renewed in 1922. Halesworth station is a small rural station in mid Suffolk on the East Suffolk line at Grid Reference TM389779. It was the junction station for the independent Southwold Railway.
The level crossing euipment comprised of four moving sections of platform which, as can be seen from the postcard illustrations, swung out across the track. Note the red level crossing targets. The platforms have been restored in recent years and the position of the join between the two halves of each platform can be seen by closely observing the fence line. The platforms are not in use for the public. At first sight the movable platform segments look like bridge componets. It is not possible to determine what the interlocking arrangements were but if anyone knows, please E mail me.
